The Portland, Saco, and Portsmouth Rail Road Company was started in 1842 to build a railroad from Portland to South Berwick, Maine. By connecting there with the Eastern or the Boston and Maine Railroad, it provided Portland with a rail link with Boston and points south. The route for the Boston and Lowell Railroad was surveyed in 1829; one year later the Massachusetts Legislature granted approval for the project.
